Maggie and Tracy at Zoo Ceramics run adult pottery classes and workshops at their studio in Waddington, just outside Lincoln. The courses specialise in hand-building techniques including coil, slab, modelling and sculpting.  The structure of each session will enable each student to explore the medium of clay at their own pace and create personal themes, or follow set projects.  Please note that we do not offer throwing courses.

CLASSES 2024 and 2025
CLASSES - The adult pottery classes are on Wednesday afternoons 1 - 3 pm and evenings 7 - 9 pm and run for 10 weeks with 16 students per class. The classes run for three terms during the year in Spring, Summer and Autumn and last 10 weeks with Raku session at the end of the summer and a Winter Feast in November.   We also add some free catch up sessions for students that has missed a few classes.

Classes cost £125.00 for a 10 week term and a charge for finished work (approximately £5- £25 for three pieces.)  Students are able to secure their place for the following term, half way through the term they are on.  As a result the classes are very popular and most places are taken up, so the only way to join is to put yourself on the waiting lists by providing us with the following five items, which can be copied and pasted to the following email address.

1. Name
2. Address
3. Mobile and Telephone Numbers
4. Waiting lists you would like to be put on. ( Wednesday Afternoon 1 - 3 pm, Wednesday Eve 7 - 9 pm. (Or both)
5. If applying for more than one person, please indicate if you would accept a single place, or if you only want to join together. ( Single, Join together)
We keep a precise date related record of all people on the waiting list and as soon as a space becomes available for a new term, we offer it to the person at the top of the list.  I will contact you be email, phone and texts and give you a set time to reply, before it is offered to the next person.  Things do change during the year and a space may become available in a matter of weeks, but sometimes it can be several months or longer.  Details of waiting list figures are shown below and are updated regularly.  Please inform us if you no longer wish to be on our waiting list and be assured that your personal information will never be passed on.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS - The workshops are becoming increasingly popular, so please fill in the application form and return with either a 50% deposit, or the full amount to secure your place. Full payment is due one month before the making session. Cancellations more than one month before the making session will be refunded in full.  Cancellations less than one month of the workshop will incur a £10 processing fee.  In the unlikely even that we have to cancel a workshop, you will be fully refunded, or you can put the payment on to another workshop.

This is a two part workshop and if you are unable to attend the glaze session, you have several options.
1. We can double fire your piece, so that if will be frost proof and can be hand painted.
2. You can glaze your piece on the next available glaze workshop, that will be in about 4 months.
3. We can glaze your piece, at an extra cost of £10 for a £65 workshop, £30 for a £85 and £95 workshops and £50 for the £175 large animal workshop.

We usually allow up to one hour extra at the end of the workshop, so students can obtain the best finish for their work, so please factor that in, if travelling by public transport.  Completed work should be collected within one month of being notified. Work that is left for longer than that without any explanation will be cleared.

PLEASE BRING WITH YOU

Take a series of photographs at eye level from the front, back and sides and the top and some detailed shots of the head. For any other animal please print out as many images of your chosen animal from sources like google images. Please note, we do have a good library of animal books, but your one may not be featured. It takes a lot of time out of our teaching schedule if we have to print lots of images from the computer. We do have a wifi connection, so you are welcome to use mobile phones, laptop and ipads. However please be aware that clay is wet and dusty and could cause damage to your equipment and we take no responsibility if this occurs.
• Sketch book
• Camera
• Overall, but we have lots of spare ones if you forget.
• Lunch if staying for double classes or the full day of the sculpture workshop.

COMPLETION AND WHAT IS EXTRA
At the end of the session, once your piece is completed, it will need to dry out for about 2 – 3 weeks before going in to a bisque firing.  You now have three options to finish your work, either by attending the glaze class three weeks after the making session, request that we glaze your piece or create your own finish.

Once your work is finished we will contact you to arrange collection, which usually takes about 4 – 8 weeks.

For any other questions you may have, please refer to the FAQ link at the bottom of the page.

Private Classes and Workshops
This is a price guide for those that want to create their own workshop or a taster session, outside the scheduled Summer and Autumn workshops.  The times of the sessions are flexible and can be altered to suit your needs.  The prices are for a making session and a glaze session that needs to be booked about three weeks later.  Please note that we do not run workshops in November or December.

WHERE IS ZOO CERAMICS?   At the Zoo Ceramics studio workshop and gallery in Waddington village, five minutes outside of Lincoln.  (Postcode LN59SA.)  There are lots of free parking spaces in the area and we also have a large driveway. Please be aware that the Budgens car park behind us, has a 2 hour time limit.  There is a post office next door with a parking area that is free in the evenings.  The classes are in the cottage at the back of the garden.  Go past the gallery to the opposite side of the cottage and under the trellis arch to the black door. To view a map go to the CONTACT section.
WHAT TO BRING   All tools and materials are provided, but you may want to bring an apron, some personal tools, a sketch book, camera and a drink.
REFRESHMENTS   Drinks and light snacks are provided on the workshops and you are welcome to bring your drinks and refreshments on the group classes.
THEMES   During the Spring and Autumn terms a theme is introduced to the group to inspire and challenge the students to create some thought provoking pieces. Participation is optional, but a prize for the best piece is given at the Winter Feast.  Previous themes have included "Genealogy", and the cryptic titles "In the Box" and "Hidden by Design." The Summer term theme involves creating a piece for the raku firing.
GRASS HOPPER   We operate a "grass hopper" system, whereby if you miss a class, you have the option to" jump" on to another session in the following weeks to catch up. In this way you will not loss any money due to holidays or illness. This system only works if you inform us of any sessions you are going to miss, so that we can offer them to another student waiting for a space.  Unfortunately we can not operate the grass hopper system during the pandemic, but you are welcome to take clay home to complete work. You can also take advantage of the free sessions that we run during the year and use it as a catch up session for any missed classes.
RAKU   The Summer Barbeque Raku session is a popular event, which includes lots of food and flames.  You can see images of this event and pictures of the class work by clicking on the link at the bottom.
WINTER FEAST   In Mid November when the classes have finished we organise an optional get-together where we eat, drink and merrily announce the winners of the Project Competition.
COVID SAFETY   We have an enhanced cleaning routine when entering and leaving the pottery.  Students are spaced apart from one another in ventilated rooms. There are single table options for those that want to keep apart.  Each student will have their own tools, cleaning materials and equipment that will be thoroughly cleaned after each use.
CAN MY SON/DAUGHTER JOIN THE CLASSES?  As the classes are specifically for adults the youngest person we accept is 15 years old.
WHERE AM I ON THE WAITING LIST?  Contact us anytime for an update on your exact position.
ARE MY CONTACT DETAILS SAFE WITH YOU?  Zoo Ceramics will never pass on your personal details to any other party without your permission.
ARE YOU GOING TO CREATE MORE CLASSES?  No sorry, the timetable is set for the year.
DO YOU OFFER A FREE TASTER SESSION?  No, as we already offer private classes and workshops.  We have also created extensive pottery class pages with lots of images that we feel fully explain our classes. You are very welcome to come and visit the pottery to see examples of the students' work and to see where and how we run the classes.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM UNABLE TO FINISH THE COURSE, WILL I GET A REFUND FOR ANY MISSED CLASSES ?  Refunds may be given for specific cases, such as long term illness or allergies to materials, but this may be dependent us finding a replacement for the space.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CANCEL A WORKSHOP?  If you need to cancel a workshop that has been booked and fully paid, a refund minus £10 processing fee is refunded, or you can forward the total amount on to another workshop.
DO YOU DO THROWING ON A WHEEL AS PART OF YOUR CLASSES?  No. We specialize in hand building techniques.
CAN YOU RECOMEND ANY THROWING CLASSES IN THE LINCOLNSHIRE AREA?  To find all the current throwing classes in Lincolnshire, you need to put the request in google and it will high light all the current classes.  You could also try the Lincoln Art College, the Alford Craft Market Centre, Andrew MacDonald at the Pot Shop in Lincoln and the Oxcombe Pottery in Horncastle and The End Room in Sleaford.  You could also visit the Lincoln Makers' Market in the Castle Square on the first Saturday of each month, as there are several potters that attend that could put you in touch with someone who runs classes.
